Finally switched my parents from a paper notebook of passwords to a password manager, took 4 visits to get it done
My dad kept a little spiral notebook by the home phone in their house in Tucson with every login written in it, and after their neighbor got hacked I told them that had to change. So I gave them two choices, keep the notebook but make the passwords way longer and harder, or let me set up a password manager on their phones and laptop. We went with the manager after 4 separate visits where I had to sit with them and walk through it, and my mom wrote the master password on a sticky note under her keyboard which I had to throw away. Now they actually like it because the app fills in the logins and my dad stopped getting locked out of his email. Has anyone found a good way to keep older folks from writing the master password down somewhere?
That sticky note under the keyboard got me. My in laws did the same thing, except it was taped to the bottom of the desk drawer. What finally worked for my mom was making the master password a sentence she already says all the time, something about her grandkids and her dog, so she never needed to write it down because it was already stuck in her head. The other thing that helped was setting up her phone so her thumb unlocks it, then the manager opens right up with just that. Fewer steps between her and the logins meant less urge to keep a backup copy somewhere.
