Had someone rip apart my password habits in 2019, glad they did
Back in 2019 a coworker at a shop near Boise watched me type my work password and said 'you know that's the same one you use for your email, right?' I brushed it off but he kept at it, showed me how one breach could link everything. Took me a weekend to set up a password manager and switch all 40+ accounts to unique passphrases. Even now I catch myself almost reusing one for a new signup though. Anyone else still fight that muscle memory after making the change?
Making the switch to a password manager was the easy part for me. The hard part was the muscle memory you're talking about. What finally helped was turning on the password generator for every new signup and letting it make something random, even for dumb stuff like a pizza app. Now my fingers never get a chance to type the old one because I don't even know the new ones. Another trick was keeping a note on my phone with just the first few words of a passphrase pattern, not the whole thing, so I had a hint but still had to build it fresh each time. Took maybe a month before reaching for an old password felt weird instead of normal.
