Hot take: Locking down my new smart lights too hard backfired.

Now I can't even turn them on from my phone.

Oh man, I feel you on that. I put my smart bulbs on a separate network with strict rules, and now the app times out every time I try to use it. Had to reset the whole system just to get them working again, which took hours. Security is good, but if you can't use them, it's pointless.

Yeah the hours resetting part hits hard. See this everywhere now, things get so locked down they break. Like putting a bike chain through the wheels and frame, sure it won't get stolen but you can't ride it either.

Is that bike chain analogy really the same though? For @umajenkins, the issue sounds like overly strict rules on the separate network, not the separation itself. I put my smart plugs on a guest network with just basic port blocking, and they connect every time. It's more about not setting the rules too tight, so things actually work.
