Just found out my neighbor's wifi was the weak link in my home security setup

I kept getting false alerts from my Ring camera at like 2am every night. Turned out my 2.4ghz channel was overloaded because his router was broadcasting on the same frequency. I used a free app called WiFi Analyzer to check and switched my channel to 11. Took maybe 5 minutes and the false alerts stopped completely. Has anyone else fixed a security issue just by changing their wifi channel?

Had a buddy who couldn't figure out why his garage door opener kept going off in the middle of the night. Turned out his neighbor two houses down had a baby monitor that was blasting on the same frequency as his opener. He downloaded a free spectrum analyzer on his phone, walked around his garage with it, and saw the interference spike clear as day. Swapped his opener to a different frequency setting and the problem just vanished. Stuff like that makes you realize how crowded the airwaves are anymore.

Hold up, I gotta push back on that a little bit. Most phone spectrum analyzers can't actually tune into the same range as garage door openers, which usually run at 300-400 MHz. Your buddy probably got lucky and saw some general RF noise, not the exact baby monitor signal. Garage door openers have gotten more secure with rolling codes, but the frequency interference thing is still real. He should check if his opener has a learn button to adjust frequencies, otherwise swapping it out is the only fix.

Gonna disagree with you on this one, sorry. I mean, most new garage door openers use fixed frequencies these days, not easily adjustable ones. Swapping to a different frequency setting isn't really a thing on most models past 2010 or so. You're basically stuck with whatever frequency it came with. The neighbor's baby monitor could still cause interference, but idk, his buddy probably just replaced the whole unit and got lucky it stopped. A phone app can't really pick up the 300-400 MHz range accurately either, those antennas aren't tuned for it. Maybe it was just RF noise from something else that changed, like the neighbor unplugging the monitor. Just saying, the story sounds a little too neat to be the whole truth.
