My uncle in Tampa told me he uses the same password for 40 sites, and I did not have a good answer for him
He asked me point blank why he needs 40 different passwords if he can barely remember one, and I kinda froze. I said something about breaches but he just said 'so what, let them see my recipe blog.' Then it hit me that most folks do not see the chain reaction, one leak leads to your email, email leads to your bank. I set him up with a password manager and wrote his master phrase on paper in a drawer, but now I wonder if that is even the right move for older folks. How do you explain this stuff to family without sounding like a know it all?
Think about what you actually did there. You told a grown man his system was wrong, handed him a tool he did not ask for, and now his entire digital life hangs on a piece of paper in a drawer that a grandkid or a cleaning person could pick up. Writing down a master phrase is a single point of failure too, only now it unlocks everything at once instead of one recipe blog. A reused password at least means a breach hits one site, not the drawer paper that opens all 40 plus his bank. Maybe your uncle is right that nobody wants his recipe blog, and the real fix for him is turning on two step checks on his email and bank instead of a whole new habit he will not keep up. Asking him what he is actually worried about losing would have gotten you further than freezing up.
