That free airport wifi splash page in Atlanta is exactly how people get their passwords stolen
Everyone acts like public wifi is fine as long as the padlock is there, but I watched a guy next to me at gate B14 type his work email into a fake Google login popup that came up before the real one. The splash page looked close to right but the address had an extra dash in it and he never looked. Do you actually check the url before you log into anything on the road, or am I the only one who is paranoid about it?
How often do you actually see a fake login popup though? I fly a fair amount and I have never once had a splash page ask me for my Google password. What you saw sounds more like a guy who clicked a bad link he got in an email, and the timing just happened to line up with him sitting at the gate. The padlock does not mean a site is honest, sure, but that is a different thing from saying airport wifi is how people get their passwords stolen. Most of these networks just want you to accept the terms so they can show you an ad, and the risk is way lower than people make it out to be.
