The old router in my parents' basement finally gave up, and 12 years of photos almost went with it

I was at my folks' place in Cleveland last month helping clean out the basement, and when I plugged in that dusty Netgear to check an old hard drive, the power supply sparked and the drive clicked once before I yanked it, so now I'm trying to recover 40 GB of family pics with a $30 USB adapter, has anyone else had luck with those cheap recovery docks or should I just send it to a pro?
