The old router in my parents' basement finally gave up, and 12 years of photos almost went with it
I was at my folks' place in Cleveland last month helping clean out the basement, and when I plugged in that dusty Netgear to check an old hard drive, the power supply sparked and the drive clicked once before I yanked it, so now I'm trying to recover 40 GB of family pics with a $30 USB adapter, has anyone else had luck with those cheap recovery docks or should I just send it to a pro?

Those USB adapter docks are hit or miss honestly, I had one work great on a drive that was just sitting too long and another time it did nothing but make clicking worse. The clicking you heard is the scary part, that usually means the drive head is stuck or scratched the platter, and every time you power it on you risk making it worse. If those pics really matter to your family, stop plugging it in and send it to a pro, it'll cost a few hundred bucks but they can pull data in a clean room. I'd do one thing first though, try the drive in a different enclosure or a desktop with a direct SATA hookup before you drop real money, sometimes it's just the old adapter that's dead and not the drive.
