Multiplying by 1.5 is the only way to survive.

My buddy Tom did this once and still ended up being 2 weeks late on a project because the client kept adding stuff. He said padding never accounts for the OTHER people who mess up your timeline. Now he just multiplies his estimate by 1.5 and calls it a day.

Tom's 1.5x rule works until you get the client who treats your timeline like a suggestion box at a restaurant. They just keep adding toppings and wondering why the pizza is burnt. At that point padding doesn't matter you need a whole separate project just for their "one small change" requests. Might as well start multiplying by 3 and call yourself a psychic.
