Client in Denver moved our Friday 5pm deadline to Wednesday 8am, and the project manager asked me to just 'tighten it up'
The only thing keeping me sane right now is a comment from another freelancer at a coffee shop on Broadway who told me she now charges a 40% rush fee the second a deadline moves up, and I want to know if anyone else has actually made that stick without losing the client.

Her line about charging 40% the second a deadline moves might be missing a step. What usually makes it stick is having that rush fee already written into your contract before the client ever signs, so it's not something you're springing on them in a panic email. When it's in the paperwork upfront, you're not the bad guy asking for more money, you're just pointing at the terms they agreed to. The clients who bail over a rush fee are often the same ones who would've nickel and dimed you the whole project anyway. And "tighten it up" from a PM always means unpaid overtime unless you push back, so that coffee shop tip is solid, just do the setup work first.
