I started sending a 'cushion quote' instead of a real one, and it saved my sanity
Last month a client in Kansas City moved a 10-page site launch from Friday to Thursday morning at 4 pm, and I lost it. After that I tried two ways of quoting: my usual honest estimate of 6 hours, and a padded version of 9 hours. The padded one won every time, because when they pushed the date up, I still had room to breathe and the work didn't suffer. I felt a little bad about it at first, but the honest number is what got me stuck in that mess in the first place. Does anybody here build slack into their quotes, or do you just eat the late night when the date moves?
