Cavity filling comparison: my old dentist vs the new one, night and day

I switched dentists after my last filling fell out while eating popcorn at a movie in Portland. The old guy used some generic composite that took 45 minutes and hurt for two days. New dentist used a ceramic filling, finished in 20 minutes, and I chewed on that side within an hour. Is a bit of extra cost for better material always worth it, or did I just get lucky with the new guy?
