My flossing technique was completely wrong, and it took a hygienist in Portland to show me
I had a cleaning last month and she mentioned my gums looked irritated, then asked if I was sawing back and forth instead of curving around each tooth. Turns out I'd been doing that for like 15 years, so now I'm retraining my muscle memory and watching YouTube demos every night. Has anyone else had a hygienist point out a basic habit you never questioned?
The "sawing back and forth" thing got me because I did the exact same thing for years and nobody ever said a word. It's funny how we pick up a habit once, decide it's just how the thing is done, and then never question it again. My dad tought me to shave with way too much pressure and I did that until my 30s, same deal with how I held a pencil, how I loaded the dishwasher, all of it. A stranger points it out one time and suddenly you're relearning stuff you thought you mastered at age 12.
