Showerthought: my old dentist patched my molar with silver stuff and my new one fixed the same tooth with white stuff, and the white one still looks normal after 3 years
Cost me $60 more at the time but I have not had to go back for a second repair since, so has anyone else switched filling types and noticed the difference?

Silver fillings can easily outlast white ones in the right spot, so your three years is not really proof of much. The white stuff wears down faster and stains over time, which is why a lot of dentists still reach for the metal on back teeth. You basically paid extra for something that looks nicer and may need replacing sooner, so the real test is what that tooth looks like in ten years.
