What did the $2 spool trick end up being? I had a similar thing happen with those plastic flossers, my dentist told me they were actually hurting my gums more than helping since I was snapping them too hard between tight teeth. Switched to a plain spool of Glide and it took a couple weeks to get the hang of wrapping it right, but my gums quit bleeding within a month. Still keep a few picks in my bag for when I'm in a rush though, old habits.
