Found out the hard way that a $40 fuel filter swap on a 6.7 Powerstroke can turn into a $3,800 injector job if you skip the water separator drain
Pulled the water separator drain plug on a customer's truck last Tuesday and got a solid cup of rusty water out of it before any diesel showed. The owner admitted he had not drained it once in 60,000 miles because the manual just says to do it at every oil change and he figured it was a suggestion. Two injectors were already rattling by the time it hit my bay, and the quote came back at $3,800 with labor. The kicker is the drain valve sits right on top of the frame rail where you can reach it in about 30 seconds with a 10mm. How many of you are actually draining these at every service, or am I the only one nagging people about it?
