Heard a kid at the parts counter say "my dad said a diesel runs on magic"

I just stood there holding a $400 injector and wondered how many customers think the same thing when their truck won't start. Has any of you had to explain to a younger guy that it's compression and fuel, not fairy dust?

My buddy actually had a kid ask him if his diesel truck drank unicorn tears once.

That kid was probably watching too many cartoons or something, honestly. 12 year olds ask the wildest stuff when they see a big diesel for the first time. My cousin's little girl asked me if my truck's smoke rings were made of dreams once. Kids just try to make sense of loud noises and black smoke in the only way they know how. It's kind of sweet in a weird way, you know?

Honestly, I get where the dad was coming from with the magic thing. These engines are so finicky with fuel quality, air ratios, and timing that it kind of seems like sorcery when everything lines up just right to make that giant metal lump roar to life. I've watched guys spend three days chasing a no-start issue, replace one little sensor, and it fires right up like nothing was wrong. That kid might have been closer to the truth than he realized, you know, just didn't have the right words for it.
