Heard a loud bang at a truck stop in Oklahoma that made me change my whole inspection routine

I was fueling up at a Pilot off I-40 last month when a tractor next to me let out this gunshot sound. Turned out the driver had a cracked flywheel housing he'd been ignoring for two weeks. The shop there said they see three of those a month from guys who skip the bottom end checks. Now I drop the inspection cover on every Class 8 that comes through my bay and look for hairline cracks with a flashlight. Has anyone else caught a major failure that way before it got expensive?

Oh jeez, here we go again with the cracked flywheel housing panic. I get why you'd be scared after hearing that bang, but dropping the inspection cover on every single truck that rolls in is overkill. I mean, I've been turning wrenches for fifteen years and I bet I've seen maybe five cracked flywheels total, and most of them were on old junkers that should've been scrapped years ago. The real issue is drivers ignoring obvious warning signs like vibration or a weird rattle, not that we need to start poking flashlights into every housing for a hairline crack that might never show up. You're gonna waste a ton of time and probably miss actual problems like leaking wheel seals or worn brake chambers while you're down there playing detective. Maybe just stick to the standard inspection points and save the dissection for when a truck actually gives you a reason to dig deeper.

Five cracked flywheels in fifteen years? That's wild to me. I've been at this for eight years and I've personally pulled three engines that had cracked flywheels, and all of them started with small hairline cracks that would have shown up with a flashlight and a little patience. One of those jobs cost a fleet owner $12,000 because the crack let go at 70 mph and took out the bell housing, starter, and transmission input shaft. You're telling me you'd rather wait for the truck to literally blow up before you bother looking?
