Just figured out why my high-pressure oil pump kept failing
I used to just throw a new pump on whenever I lost pressure in a Powerstroke, thinking the part was junk. Then a guy in Toledo showed me his trick after I swapped my third pump in 8 months, checking the IPR screen for debris. Turns out I was missing a clogged screen every time, which starved the new pump. Now I always pull and inspect that screen first, saves me $400 a pop. Any of you guys run into this on the 6.0L?

Three pumps in 8 months and you still didn't check the screen until the third one? That sounds like you were throwing parts at it hoping for a miracle. A lot of guys just swap the pump and call it done, but if you'd actually tested the old pump on a bench you'd see most of them are fine. The IPR screen clogs because the system is already contaminated, usually from something else like a worn HPOP or failing injectors. So cleaning that screen just hides the real problem until the new pump eats the same debris. I've seen guys do the screen trick and still lose pressure a month later when the actual failure is the pump itself. You might save $400 now but you're gambling on a bandaid fix that won't hold.

Agree hard with this. Throwing pumps at it without digging deeper is just wasting money and time. Ive seen way too many guys swap three pumps before finding out their HPOP was dumping metal into the system. Cleaning the screen is a temp fix at best, it just delays the real problem. If the system is contaminated from worn injectors or a dying pump, that debris is gonna keep coming back. You might save a few bucks now but youre gonna pay later with another tow bill and more downtime. Better to spend the time checking everything first instead of guessing.

Felt that in my gut. Three pumps in eight months and nobody thought to pull the screen until the third one? That's not just bad luck, that's a lack of basic troubleshooting. I've seen the same thing happen with a buddy's 7.3, he swapped two pumps before I told him to check the IPR screen and it was packed with glitter. Cleaned it, pressure came back, but we knew it was just a matter of time before the real problem showed up. You're right, you save a few bucks today but you're just kicking the can down the road to a bigger bill next month.
