Magnetic drain plugs vs cutting open filters, which actually tells you more?
Been doing oil analysis on my own rigs for years. Last month I pulled the drain plug on my 6.7 and found a nice layer of metallic fuzz stuck to it. Got all excited thinking I caught something early. Then I cut open the filter and it was clean as a whistle. So which one is the real warning sign? I always figured the magnet catching stuff was a problem, but maybe it's just normal wear particles doing their job. Does anyone else bother with both or do you trust one over the other?
