PSA: Cold air intakes on big rigs - hype or real gains?

I was convinced aftermarket CAIs were just noise makers for pickup guys, but a buddy documented a 2 MPG improvement on his Freightliner Cascadia after 6 months of data logging. Has anyone else seen actual fuel savings from one, or was that just a lucky fluke?

Oh man, that's real. I did the same thing on my Pete 389 last year. Tracked it religiously for 8 months. Saw about 1.8 MPG on average. Not a fluke at all. The stock intake on these trucks is already decent, but the aftermarket ones let the engine breathe way better when you're hauling heavy. Kept my EGTs down too, which is nice. Just make sure you get a good brand, not cheap crap from Amazon. Worth it for the fuel savings alone if you run a lot of miles.

Yeah that data is solid. I used to be skeptical. Changed my mind.
