That $80 laser thermometer finally caught a liar

Bought a cheap laser thermometer after a truck kept throwing coolant codes, turns out the temp sensor was fine and the gauge was just fibbing about 40 degrees. The tool paid for itself when I pointed it at the dash and proved it to the owner, who swore the truck was overheating. Anyone else catch a lying gauge with one of these things?

Honestly the gauge was the whole problem all along. Those dash sensors go bad way more often than people give them credit for. A cheap IR gun saved you a massive headache and probably a few hundred bucks in parts you didn't need. I've seen the same trick work on a buddy's diesel that kept lying about oil temp too. Best twenty minutes of troubleshooting ever.
