The day I stopped fighting my air dryer and finally checked the purge valve

I ran a rig for 5 years and every winter I'd bleed the tanks twice a week, blaming the cold. Then last February I pulled the purge valve off a 2007 Pete and found a chunk of carbon the size of my pinky nail stuck in the seat. Cleaned it with a wire brush and some brake clean, 20 minutes total, and I haven't had a wet line since. Anyone else ever chased moisture issues for months before finding a clogged valve instead of a compressor problem?

Had the exact same thing happen on a freightliner about 3 years back. I was convinced the compressor was toast, even had a shop quote me for a whole new head. Then my buddy who runs a fleet said to check the purge valve first. Pulled it and there was this gritty black sludge baked right into the seat, looked like old coffee grounds. Cleaned it with a pick and some compressed air and it ran perfect for another two years. Made me feel like an idiot for all the times I swapped dryers and chased electrical gremlins. Now that valve is the first thing I check when I see any moisture, before I even touch the compressor. This post would've saved me a lot of headache back then.
