Used to torque injector hold-downs by feel, then a 2016 Ram 2500 ate a $900 injector
I always figured my arm knew 44 ft-lbs after 15 years in the shop. Went by feel on a Cummins 6.7 last month and the hold-down bolt backed out 300 miles later. Pulled the injector, scored the bore, customer paid $900 for a new one plus my labor for free. Now the torque wrench comes out every single time, no exceptions. Anybody else have a job that finally broke the by-feel habit?
Honestly, going by feel has saved my butt more times than it's burned me. Fifteen years of muscle memory doesn't just disappear because one bolt let go, that's a fluke not a pattern. Half the old timers I know can hit 44 ft-lbs within a couple pounds and they never touch a wrench unless it's a head bolt or something critical. Plus torque wrenches lie too if they're dropped or never calibrated, so you're trusting a tool that can be just as wrong as your arm.
