Bought a $200 drawing tablet and it sits in my closet now

I keep seeing people say you absolutely need a display tablet to get good at digital art. So I dropped $200 on a screenless one last spring, thinking it'd be the magic ticket. Honestly, after 4 months of fighting with hand-eye coordination, I went back to my mouse for line work. Has anyone else found screenless tablets just aren't worth the hassle?

Have you ever tried taping a printed reference photo to the tablet itself? I read an interview with a comic artist who does that, and it apparently helps some people bridge that weird gap between looking up at the screen and drawing down on the pad. I hear you on the frustration, though. I tried one of those screenless tablets years ago and gave up after a weekend because my hand just wouldn't cooperate with what my eyes were seeing. Some folks swear by them after a long adjustment period, but for me it felt like fighting the tool instead of creating anything. Maybe it just clicks for certain people and not others.
