Just noticed how fake depth of field is everywhere now

I was scrolling through art tags the other day and saw five pieces in a row with that heavy blur effect to fake camera focus. It felt weird because real lens blur has this gradual falloff, but digital artists keep using the same hard circle filter. Has anyone else started noticing this shortcut in showcase posts?

Started using fake depth of field myself back in the day when I was learning digital art, thought it made things look more professional or whatever. But honestly seeing it explained like this makes total sense, that hard circle blur really does stick out once you pay attention to how actual camera lenses work. It's kind of like when you notice a bad photoshop job for the first time and then can't unsee it everywhere lol. I bet a lot of artists just copy what they see in tutorials without realizing the physics behind real blur is way more subtle than that harsh filter.

Wait, isn't a little fake blur better than none at all though @jessica331?
