Lost six hours of work when my tablet pen stopped mid-stroke yesterday

I was right in the middle of a commissioned portrait around 9 PM, layering shadows on the face, when my Wacom pen just quit. No warning, no low battery indicator, it just stopped sending signals to the tablet. I spent an hour trying driver reinstalls and USB port swaps before realizing the nib was completely worn down and making intermittent contact. Now I have to redo half the shading from memory because my autosave only caught the base sketch. Has anyone else had a nib wear out that fast without noticing the pressure going weird first?

Oh wait, the nib was just worn down? That's a cheap fix though.

Yeah I was on @robin896's side but honestly this changed my mind too.

But like, @paige_bell81, isn't that just kicking the can down the road though? I mean, worn nibs can be a symptom of something else wrong with the valve or the seating. Idk, feels like you'd still want to check the whole assembly before calling it fixed.
