My first digital art tablet was a $40 mistake, then I tried a cheap display one

I spent 6 months using a pad tablet where you look at the screen while drawing on the pad. I thought that was just how digital art worked, and honestly my wrist hated it. Then a friend let me try her display tablet at a meetup in Austin, where you draw right on the screen. The difference was like night and day, my lines finally went where I wanted them to. I bought a budget display tablet for $180 and my art improved more in 2 weeks than in those whole 6 months. I still think the expensive ones are overhyped, but the pad style should come with a warning label. Does anyone else feel like the learning curve is way steeper than people admit, or is it just me? Has anyone tried one of those foldable screen tablets that attach to a laptop?

Did your wrist file a formal complaint after those 6 months, or did it just stage a silent strike? Mine quit on me, so I ended up drawing like a crab with arthritis. That first pad tablet made me feel like I was writing with oven mitts on, and the display one fixed my lines faster than my ego could handle.
