Unpopular opinion: digital art showcases are ruining creativity
I visited a gallery in Austin last weekend that had a whole room of projected art loops, and I couldn't tell if it was brilliant or just sensory overload. So which side are you on: are these showcases helping artists reach new audiences, or making everything feel like a screen?

Shoot, I’m not sure clicking through a gallery slideshow is really that different from doomscrolling just because it’s in a fancy room. But @oliviabutler, I have to respectfully push back on the idea that it forces slow looking. Most visitors I’ve seen at these shows spend ten seconds on each loop and move on.

Is a room of looped projections really that different from staring at Instagram on a black screen in a dark bedroom? Galleries curate these displays with intention, which is more than you can say for the algorithm feeding you phone art while you wait for coffee. If anything, digital showcases force a slower, more deliberate kind of looking that traditional pieces often don't get.
