An old guy at the ReStore in Portland showed me how to check a level for real
I was buying a beat up Stanley level for $4 and he grabbed it, laid it on the shelf, and flipped it end for end to see if the bubble landed in the same spot both times. Said half the used levels on that rack were junk and nobody ever thinks to check. Now I do it every time, and I'm wondering what other tools I've been buying without testing first.
Oh man, I saw a woodworking guy on YouTube do this whole bit about buying used hand planes and he said the same kinda thing. He checks the sole for flatness with a straightedge and feels for wobble, plus he looks at the blade to see if someone ground it down to nothing. Said most of the cheap ones at flea markets were dropped or left in a shed and the metal warped just enough to mess up every cut. Never even thought to bring a little ruler with me when I go hunting for old tools.
