Drove 45 minutes for a custom door hinge and the guy just laughed at my measurements

Went to the only proper hardware place near Colorado Springs to match a rough-in hinge for a 1940s door. Told the old timer behind the counter I measured the gap at 3/16 on the jamb side. He asked me where I put the straight edge. I said on the frame lip. He just laughed and said no wonder nothing fits right. Turns out you measure from the slab, not the frame. Walked out with the right hinge but felt like a complete idiot. Has anyone else had a small measuring mistake turn into a full day of rework? I redid the whole door casing last weekend because of it.
