I just saw my neighbor try to hang a shelf with only one drywall anchor

He was putting up a 4 foot long solid oak shelf and only used a single anchor in the middle, saying it felt 'tight enough'. That thing is going to rip right out the first time you put a plant on it, you need at least two anchors into studs for something that heavy. Has anyone else had to explain basic load bearing to a friend before they wrecked their wall?

But what happens when you actually try to explain it? I told my brother he needed to find a stud for his TV mount and he just kept tapping the wall saying it all sounded the same. Do people just not understand how much things actually weigh, or is it pure optimism that the wall will hold?

Right? I've seen so many shelves ripped out from one anchor.

Notice how often the simplest, most basic advice is the one people skip. They'll buy a fancy gadget instead of just using two screws in solid wood. It happens with everything from shelves to relationships, looking for a complex fix when the sturdy, boring answer is right there.
