Patched a hole in drywall with a can of beans and it actually held

Last weekend I was fixing a doorknob hole in my laundry room and realized I was out of joint compound. Had a can of refried beans sitting on the counter and figured why not try it as a filler. Smoothed it on, let it dry for 24 hours, sanded it down and painted over it. Been 3 days and no cracking or falling out. Anyone else ever used random pantry stuff for repairs?

Actually you know that toothpaste trick only works if you actually have the hole filled with something behind it. I tried toothpaste once on a drywall dimple from a screw and it fell out after a week because there was nothing holding it in. The refried beans thing is wild though because beans have starch and fiber that basically act like a natural binder once they dry out. I bet the lard in refried beans helps too since it makes it kind of waterproof. But fair warning if you ever get a mouse or roach in that wall they'll definitely chew through that bean patch looking for a snack.

Read somewhere that people use toothpaste for small holes too.

Does toothpaste actually hold up long term or just hide the problem for a day?
