That one Saturday when the 40 year old shutoff finally gave up and flooded my whole basement
I was swapping out a leaky faucet in my Minneapolis house when I went to kill the water and the main gate valve just spun in my hand, then water started pouring out of the packing nut. Spent 3 hours with a bucket and a shop vac until a plumber friend swung by with a repair clamp so we could at least stop the spray. Funny thing is, older homes like mine had brass valves built to be fixed, and now everything at the store is a throwaway cartridge you replace every few years. Got the whole thing redone for $180 in parts and a case of beer. Anyone else notice old houses were built to be worked on while new stuff just gets tossed?
