The crawlspace in that St. Paul rental had a surprise that changed my whole approach
I was helping a buddy swap out a water heater in his 1940s St. Paul place last spring, and when I popped the crawlspace hatch, there was a full spider web of old knob and tube wiring just sitting on top of the new pex lines. That stuff wasn't even dead, it was still live in a few spots, which explained why his basement lights flickered every time the fridge kicked on. Have any of you run into abandoned wiring like this in a reno, and did you actually pull it out or just cap and tag it for the inspector?

Oh man, that's wild! Actually, knob and tube is usually way older than the 1940s, most of that stuff was phased out by the 1930s or so. Sounds more like your buddy's place might've been built earlier than they thought, or maybe someone did a real shady patch job later on. Still super sketchy that it was live though!
