Vent: 3 years of painting trim before caulking it first

Just redid my baseboards last week and realized I've been doing it backwards this whole time. Caulk first, paint second - my painter neighbor saw me working and literally facepalmed. Anyone else have a basic step they somehow missed for years?

Oh man, I did the exact same thing with crown molding a few years back! My buddy who flips houses saw me working and just shook his head (not very encouraging, honestly). What finally clicked for me was doing the caulk at night so it could dry while I slept, then painting in the morning. It's one of those things where you feel like a goof for not knowing, but hey, at least we figured it out eventually right?

Ngl, I tried a heat gun once to speed up drying and melted half the caulk tube.

Holy cow, that night drying trick is smart though. Did you run into any issues with the caulk shrinking overnight and needing a second pass before you could paint? Because I swear when I finally did it right, I still had to go back and touch up gaps I missed.
