Water stains on my ceiling appeared 3 weeks after a hidden leak

Back in March I noticed a tiny yellow spot on the bathroom ceiling, maybe the size of a quarter. I figured it was just old paint or a smudge, so I ignored it. Three weeks later that spot turned into a brown ring almost two feet wide, and the drywall started sagging. Turned out a pipe joint behind the wall had been dripping slowly for months, and the moisture had been traveling along the joists before it ever showed. Cost me $480 to have a plumber find it and another $220 to patch and repaint the ceiling myself. The lesson is that any stain, no matter how small, means water is doing damage somewhere you can't see. Has anyone else had a slow leak hide like that, and how did you track it down before it got worse?

Ugh, that is so frustrating. I had a similar thing happen in my laundry room, only my stain stayed tiny for like two months, so I really thought it was nothing. Then one day I opened the cabinet under the sink and the whole thing was warped and swollen, water had been dripping down the back of the pipe the whole time. Ended up having to replace part of the cabinet frame, not just patch a ceiling. The worst part is you beat yourself up for not acting sooner, but honestly, who looks for a leak when the spot is that small? It really is a sneaky kind of damage. Hope your ceiling is holding up okay now.
