Why does nobody tell you the outlet box is too shallow until the outlet is already wired
Spent 45 minutes last Saturday trying to cram a GFCI into a 1970s retrofit box that someone had filled with three runs of 12 gauge and a wad of drywall mud, only to find out at the hardware store that they sell a $6 box extender that would have solved it in two minutes. I still don't get why the guy behind the counter didn't mention it when I bought the outlet. Anyone got a trick for spotting shallow boxes before you cut the power?

Did you check the depth of the box before you started wiring? I made the same mistake last month with a dimmer switch and ended up jamming everything back in there half crooked because I didn't want to drive back to the store. Now I just stick a pencil in the box first and if it bottoms out before my knuckle hits the wall I know I'm gonna need an extender.
