Dropped $210 on a tiny tile saw, wish I rented it first
I redid my bathroom floor last month and figured a $210 wet tile saw would pay off. Turns out I only had about 30 cuts total, mostly straight ones, and the thing just sat there collecting dust. The rental place nearby charges $45 a day, so I could have used it twice and saved $120. Plus storing that saw in my garage is a pain, it's heavy and takes up a whole shelf. If you're doing one small room, just rent and skip the cleanup hassle. Anyone else buy a tool for one job and regret the storage space?
Man, I feel this. I bought a $90 tile cutter for a backsplash job and ended up wishing I had just borrowed my neighbor's. What worked for me was checking if the local hardware store had a loaner program, and turns out mine lets you rent for half a day at $25, which is way cheaper than buying. For bigger stuff I just call around to a few rental spots and compare prices, since some charge by the hour instead of the full day. Now I keep a rule: if I will not use it at least three times, I rent or borrow. My garage shelf thanks me for it.
