Guy at Home Depot said just caulk over the old grout, and that's terrible advice
I was in the tile aisle at the Home Depot on 4th Ave last Saturday and heard a guy tell his buddy to skip re-grouting his shower and just run a bead of caulk over the whole thing. That's a band aid that traps water behind it and gives mold a place to grow, and you'll be ripping out the whole wall in two winters. Grout is porous and caulk won't bond right to dirty grout anyway, so you're just hiding a leak. Has anyone actually pulled off a cheap grout fix that held up, or is tearing it out really the only way?

That 4th Ave guy's plan fails because caulk needs a clean dry surface, so scrape the grout lines first.
