Hot take: cheap paint can look just as good as premium if you prep right

I painted my living room with a $15 gallon from the hardware store and it's held up fine for 8 months now. All I did was clean the walls with TSP and use a good primer first. Am I missing something or is the expensive paint hype overblown?

My buddy painted his garage with the cheapest flat white he could find and skipped primer. It looked fine for about a week then started peeling off in big sheets whenever he bumped it with a ladder.

Wait, he really skipped primer on bare garage concrete? That's wild. Even the cheap stuff would have given the paint something to bite into. No wonder it peeled off in sheets, that's basically just a layer of dust and paint sitting on top of each other.
