Just realized I've been using the wrong kind of sandpaper for drywall this whole time. Found out in a library book from 1998.

A 120 grit open coat paper is what that 1998 book probably had you using, and @the_jessica's grandpa might have been onto something with the older methods. But I have to disagree that old info is always secretly better, because sandpaper technology has actually improved a lot since then. The adhesives and backing materials used today hold up way longer without shedding grit halfway through a sheet like the old stuff did. Have you tried the newer stearate coated papers to see if they actually save you time and frustration?

A library book from 1998 is the source of this revelation? My local branch still has a card catalog. I'm shocked the book didn't recommend using a horsehair brush for the final coat. Products and methods from that long ago are often just obsolete, not secretly better.

Why are we acting like old info is automatically wrong? That 1998 book was written when pros actually used their hands more. Maybe that specific grit and paper type works better for certain finishes. New isn't always better, sometimes they just change the product to sell more. You might have been doing it the right way all along and the new stuff is just marketing.

My grandpa swore by his old sandpaper methods... said the new stuff just wears out faster.
