My attempt to fix a squeaky floor turned into a full basement inspection

I pulled up a board in my living room to find the joist was rotten, which led me down a rabbit hole of checking every beam with a flashlight for two hours. My cat decided this was a great game and kept dropping his toy mouse into the holes I made. Has anyone else had a small repair turn into a huge surprise project?

Hunt.hayden is probably right that I overthink things, but I can't help myself... I'm the type of person who finds a loose screw in the wall and ends up tearing out all the drywall in the room. @max716 I should check for surface rot, but I already went full nuclear and checked every joist with my phone flashlight... my cat was thrilled though, she kept batting her toy mouse down into the holes like it was a game of plinko.

My old house in Toledo was like that. Every fix uncovered three more problems, usually involving plumbing.

Check if it's just surface rot before you panic.

Why assume every hidden problem is a disaster waiting to happen? Sometimes a rotten joist is just one bad spot, not a sign the whole house is falling down. You could have just fixed that single board and been done with it. All that extra looking around probably just caused you more stress over nothing. My old place had a few soft spots that lasted for years without getting worse. Not every small fix needs to become a huge project.
