My neighbor watched me mortar a whole wall before telling me I had the trowel backwards
Last Saturday I was finally finishing the block wall on the side of my garage here in Tucson, and my neighbor Dave wandered over with his coffee like he does every weekend. He stood there for a good 20 minutes just watching me spread mortar, not saying a word, and I figured he was just being polite. Then he goes, "You know the flat side goes down, right?" I looked at my trowel and sure enough I had been using the notched edge to scoop and the flat edge to spread the whole time, which explains why my mortar joints looked so rough on the first two rows. I had already gone through 3 bags of mix and was about to start row four. He didn't even laugh, just sipped his coffee and said his brother-in-law did the same thing back in 2011. I ended up knocking off the top two rows and redoing them, which cost me another $40 in mortar and half a Saturday. Now Dave checks on me every single weekend and I'm honestly not sure if it's neighborly or if he's just waiting to catch the next screw up. Has anyone else had a neighbor who watches your project silently until you mess up, or is Dave just a special kind of helpful?
