Shoutout to the guy at the hardware store who saved me from a huge tile mistake

I was about to tile my bathroom floor with those big 12x24 inch porcelain tiles and I almost used the cheap, premixed mastic from a bucket. The guy at the counter saw my cart and straight up asked if I was putting it on a floor. When I said yes, he told me that stuff would never fully set under a big tile and would stay soft, causing everything to shift and crack. I had already bought two buckets at $35 each, so that was $70 down the drain since I couldn't return opened adhesive. He pointed me to a proper powdered thinset mortar instead. I'm so glad he spoke up because I would have wasted all that tile and a whole weekend of work. Has anyone else almost used the wrong adhesive for a big job like that?

Yeah, that prep work is everything. I learned the hard way too, had to scrape up a whole floor because I didn't clean the old thinset off well enough first.

That's rough for your buddy, @flores.mark. It really depends on what he was trying to do. A lot of DIY floor jobs go wrong because the surface wasn't prepped right first. If there's any old glue or wax left, the new stuff just won't stick. It peels up and takes chunks with it. Proper cleaning and sanding first is the key step everyone wants to skip.
