That time my neighbor called my deck stain 'barn paint' and walked off laughing
He watched me spend 6 hours sanding and applying a mahogany solid stain to my front deck, then said it looked like I'd just painted a fence and asked if he could borrow my brush for his chicken coop - has anyone else had a DIY project completely dismissed by someone who's never even picked up a sander?

It's funny how some people just see the world in black and white, like if it's not a pro job it's just "barn paint." I notice that with a lot of stuff, not just staining. Some folks can't see the effort, only the end result if it looks familiar to them.

omg YES people are so quick to judge stuff they've never done. my FIL watched me spend an entire weekend carefully painting my kitchen cabinets - sanding, priming, two coats of quality paint with a foam roller for a smooth finish - and then asked if he could use my leftover "wall paint" for his garage shelves. i wanted to scream "THATS NOT HOW ANY OF THIS WORKS" but i just smiled and said no.
