The one comment that made me stop using silicone caulk in bathrooms

A tile guy on Reddit said silicone traps moisture behind the grout and I checked my 3 year old shower and sure enough there was black mold under all of it, so now I just use sanded caulk for the change of plane joints.

Three years is about right for that kind of hidden mold. I had the exact same thing happen in my last house, pulled off the silicone around the tub and found a whole colony of black stuff living under there. It was nasty and took forever to clean. The caulk looks clean on top but it's basically a plastic sheet that traps all the moisture against the grout. Now I just use a good quality sanded caulk too and I check it every few months for any cracks. Pain in the butt but way better than dealing with mold.

Actually sanded caulk isnt for bathrooms, its for tile floors.

Wait, are you saying sanded caulk actually works better for bathroom mold than the regular silicone stuff? I had the same nasty surprise behind my shower caulk last year and I'm totally switching to sanded now.
