The random screw I found in my attic was the exact size I needed for a shelf project

I was digging through a box of old junk from the previous owner and found a single 2-inch wood screw that matched the thread pattern on my shelf bracket perfectly, which saved me a trip to Lowe's and $4, but now I'm wondering if I should check the attic more often for hidden treasures or if that's just asking for trouble.

My rule of thumb after finding a whole set of drywall anchors in my attic is to always check but never dig without a plan. That screw was probably left by the previous owner who had the same bracket setup you do, so it's not random luck, it's just leftover hardware. You'll find more screws, maybe some old curtain rods, and definitely a thousand spider carcasses before you hit anything useful. Bring a flashlight and a mask up there next time, because the treasures come with dust and probably mouse poop.

@milesbarnes That spider carcass comment hit home, I found a jar of pickles up there once that definitely wasn't mine.

Exactly, the previous owner's leftovers are like a time capsule of bad decisions. My attic had a stack of 90s sports illustrated magazines next to a rusted hedge trimmer that still had grass clippings on it from like 1998. The spider carcass thing is real though, I pulled down a box of christmas lights and found a whole ecosystem of dead bugs and what looked like a dried up mouse tail. Dust mask is mandatory, I learned that the hard way when I sneezed for three days after poking around up there once.
