Took me 3 years to realize I was hanging drywall backwards

I always put the tapered edge facing out on the butt joints. Thought that was the point, to give the mud somewhere to go. Then my buddy who does commercial work came over, took one look, and asked why I was making it harder on myself. Turns out you're supposed to butt the tapered edges together so the mud sits flush. I wasted so much time and mud shimming those joints. Anyone else learn basic stuff way later than you should have?

Tapered edge facing out" is just a great way to test your floor level.

Came here to say the same thing man, I did the exact opposite for like two houses before a drywall crew laughed at me on a lunch break.

Oh man, learned that one the hard way too. Always double check before cutting.
