Tried staining my deck with a $15 pump sprayer instead of a brush

I figured it'd save time but ended up with splotchy spots all over, especially near the railing where it pooled. I spent another 4 hours sanding those areas down and re-brushing them. Has anyone else had luck with sprayers for staining or is brush the only way to go?

Thinning it out just makes it run more and soak into the wood unevenly. A good quality brush gives you way more control and saves you from having to redo half the deck.

Did you try thinning the stain on a test board first or just go straight from the can? I've seen people thin it way too much and then it drips down the sides of the railing posts and dries into nasty streaks that you can't even sand out without losing the wood's shape. Would love to know what brand of stain you were using too, because some of that cheaper stuff separates like crazy in a sprayer.

Thin the stain with mineral spirits next time so it won't pool up.
