Update: the guy at the Omaha ReStore said my cabinet doors were fine, and he was wrong
I picked up a set of oak cabinet doors at the ReStore in Omaha for $40 and the volunteer told me the frames were solid, so I skipped checking them with a square. After hanging the first three, the gaps on the top right were almost 3/16 inch off and I couldn't figure out why until I laid the doors flat on my bench. Turns out the frames were twisted from sitting in a damp warehouse and no amount of hinge adjusting was going to fix it. Now I bring a small square and a straight edge with me every time I buy used doors, and I walk away if anything rocks. Does anyone have a trick for taking the twist out of an old frame, or do I just cut my losses on these?
Lay them flat with weight on the high corners and let them sit in a dry shop for a week or two, sometimes the twist relaxes a little. If they still rock after that, you can try shimming the hinge side to pull the frame straighter, but twisted oak usually wins, so don't be surprised if you're out the $40.
